Shane Koyczan (British Columbia, Canada)
Shane Koyczan is a performance slam poet and Canadian icon. He publishes, performs, and opened for the Vancouver Winter Olympics. Wherever he travels, a storm of PR follows, and these photos support the marketing efforts. I’ve shot for Shane several times - this studio shoot explored a visual language to parallel his deeply vulnerable work.

Shane Koyczan’s work is outlandishly creative and almost surreally vulnerable. Attending one of Shane’s performances is a transcendent and deeply human experience.
To support Shane’s touring and publications, we had to create a visual language that could speak to the experience of a Koyczan performance and drop seamlessly into PR and promotional channels.
Working in-studio, we used gelled lights, patterned shadows, and multiple exposures to create surreal, graphic portraits that could fit into a broad range of graphic design needs. The intersection of Shane’s performance and my production design and direction was one of the more gratifying creative collaborations of my career.
